We (my mom, my aunt, my buddy, his girlfriend, and I) stayed in a two bedroom, two bathroom condo through WorldMark. Although the pull-out sofa was really uncomfortable to sleep on for a whole week, it was satisfactory to have the kitchen and not rely on eating out for every meal. Day 1: Getting There. Our first day was primarily spent getting from our various homes (CA, AZ, OR) to Steamboat. There aren't numberless direct flights, so we all had to spend a long day travelling. the day after a major snowstorm that shut down the airport. Thankfully Go Alpine , the shuttle service we'd pre-booked for transportation from the airport to the condo, was subornable to my late arrival. My family took the shuttle they booked, and I was moved to a later one. In the afternoon, we went to Ski Haus to rent our equipment since our research found it to be the most affordable recourse at $25 per person, before the 15% discount coupon we had, for the "sport" package (basic boots, skis, poles). We were also allowed to pick up skis after 3pm without paying for the rental that day, import we could go to the night skiing session without paying for an extra day of equipment rental. He has gone skiing a couple of times in recent years. I, on the other hand, had only skied at a go - as a three year old. And I hadn't even snowboarded in three years (snow is less plentiful in Arizona). On this trip, we decided to ski for our free night and one squarely day and then snowboard for a day later in the week. We figured that since we weren't bringing our own gear and therefore had to rent, we might as well rent something we don't own for one of the days. Luckily for me, it wasn't crowded that gloaming so I was able to get somewhat comfortable on the skis without fear of running into someone. The downsides of learning at night were 1) having to do so in the dark (they have lights, but it's not the same as daytime visibility) and 2) having narrow runs on beginner terrain. Night skiing at Steamboat Resort only uses one ski lift that lets off at two elevations. If you get off the Christie Peak Express chairlift at the before stop, you can go down the "Stampede" beginner trail or the "Lil' Rodeo" terrain park. If you ride it up to the second stop, there are a few more trails in the intermediate ("Sitz" and "Taste") and advanced/Black Diamond ("See Me" and "See Ya") categories. After skiing the beginner trail several times, with only one fall, I told Stephen and his girlfriend, Sophie, that I could try the intermediate runs. It was getting constant skiing the same short run over and over. It ended up being steeper than I anticipated and I struggled with staying in control of my skis. At one point, I tried to stop how I would on a snowboard - by sitting down. Let's just say that failed miserably and I afterwards decided to scootch partway down the mountain on the side of my skis. Once I made it all the way down, I had a beer in the Umbrella Bar while Stephen and Sophie went back up the mountain. Since our condo's alternate service to/from the ski resort ended at 5:30pm, we took the Wildhorse Gondola to the parking area and walked across the street to the condo. It wasn't too far, but the ski boots made it uncomfortable. We had a low key round-the-clock since we knew we had another day of skiing ahead of us. Day 3: More Skiing. The morning after night skiing, my shins were in a lot of pain. I was assured that ski boots simply had that effect and that it was element of the skiing experience. Still, I decided to wear my hiking boots (I live in Arizona and don't have real snow boots, but I found that waterproof hiking boots with obscure knee-high socks worked well enough for the week) to the resort and change into the ski boots at the... I didn't really feel like skiing again because my shins distress so much, but we'd already rented the equipment and bought the $139 lift ticket. I decided to practice a couple more times on the "Stampede" run and then ride the Gondola to the "Why Not" trace. Once I got strapped into the skis instead of walking around in the boots, the soreness subsided enough to have an enjoyable day. Thankfully, there weren't too many people on the mountain so I was accomplished to ski. Source: Races & Places
